Autoresponders are arguably one of the greatest tools an Internet marketer has. It can automate your communications and your marketing, build relationships, and create credibility and much more.
A properly employed autoresponder can be the difference between a minor income and a sustainable income. But autoresponders are not without pitfalls that can get you in trouble and work against you.
What follows are some of the best tips you can use to make sure you??re getting all the value out of your autoresponder, but also avoiding the problems that may come along with using an autoresponder.
1. DE-DUPE YOUR LISTS – If your autoresponder has the option, make sure you exclude other lists of customers that have performed certain actions for specific types of mailings.
For example, if you have a product that you just updated on the 15th of the month, make sure the list of people that bought that product since the 15th don??t get notified of the updated version being available.
If you don??t do this, people will needlessly download the same version they just bought recently. That won??t help your credibility or make your customers happy. Also, when emailing your list to sell one of your products, make sure you don??t mail to the subscribers that already own it. See the ??create separate lists by actions??tip.
2. GEO-TARGET YOUR MESSAGES – Make sure you create separate messages and deliver them by region if appropriate. If the message is only appropriate for certain states, or countries, or has unique language considerations, then send them only to the appropriate locations.
For example, in the US the game is called ??soccer?? but is called ??futbol??or ??football??in many other countries. Do your emails always reference Dollars or Euros? Is your humor or personal story only appropriate for certain countries?
3. CREATE SEPARATE LISTS BY ACTIONS – It??s important to maintain your lists by the actions that your customers take. If a person signs up for your newsletter list then also is put on a list for purchasers of your product, you can target certain messages better and not send them needless promotions.
So, when it is time to blast another notice out to your newsletter list that promotes your product, you can deselect the list of customers that already purchased the product.
4. CUSTOMIZE YOUR MESSAGES, WITHIN LIMITS – Most autoresponders have the ability to insert the first or last name, or country or other pieces of information into the body of your messages.
This is a great feature to use to make your messages more personal, help build relationships and keep your autoresponder messages from looking automated. Some marketers overuse this feature and want to insert the customer??s name way too often.
This irritates many readers, and becomes very obvious what you are trying to accomplish. Customization is a great technique to split test and determine how your list reacts to it.
5. TIMING IS EVERYTHING – Many quality autoresponders have the ability to send messages immediately (after they are queued and processed). Higher quality autoresponders have the ability to time your delivery on a certain day of the week, time of day, day of the moth, and so on. So, make sure you give your customer ample time to read your message before a deadline.
Less than one full day??s notice is not enough allow the casual email reader to read the email and take action before a certain window closes. If you know the message is based on a holiday or day of the week, use your autoresponder??s feature to schedule the messages delivery two to three days before the holiday deadline, for example.
Your autoresponder can be a very valuable asset and make you a lot of money. If not used wisely, it can cost you customers, credibility and lost revenue. Using some simple controls can make your autoresponder the number one tool in your marketing toolbox!
